RESUMO

The aim of this study was to prepare poly-N-isopropylmethacrylamide-co-acrylic acid-acrylamide [p-(NIPMAM-co-AA-AAm)] via precipitation polymerization in an aqueous medium. Rhodium nanoparticles were formed in the microgel network by an in-situ reduction technique with the addition of sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. Pure p-(NIPMAM-co-AA-AAm) and hybrid microgels [Rh-(p-NIPMAM-co-AA-AAm)] microgels were examined by using UV-Visible, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) techniques. The catalytic activities of the hybrid microgel [Rh-(p-NIPMAM-co-AA-AAm)] for the degradation of azo dyes such as alizarin yellow (AY), congo red (CR), and methyl orange (MO) were compared and the mechanism of the catalytic action by this system was examined. Various parameters including the catalyst amount and dye concentration influenced the catalytic decomposition of azo dyes. In order to maximize the reaction conditions for the dye's quick and efficient decomposition, the reaction process was monitored by spectroscopic analysis. The rate constants for reductive degradation of azo dyes were measured under various conditions. When kapp values were compared for dyes, it was found that [Rh-(p-NIPMAM-co-AA-AAm)] hybrid microgels showed superior activity for the degradation of MO dyes compared to the reductive degradation of CR and AY.

RESUMO

The present work is focused on pyrolysis of polystyrene waste for production of combustible hydrocarbons. The experiments were performed in an indigenously made furnace in the presence of a laboratory synthesised copper oxide. The pyrolysis products were collected and characterised. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that the liquid fraction contains C-H, C-O, C-C, C=C and O-H bonds, which correspond to various aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry traced compounds ranging from C1 to C4 in the gaseous fraction, whereas in the liquid fraction 15 components ranging from C3 to C24 were detected. From the results it has been concluded that CuO as a catalyst not only increased the liquid yield but also reduced the degradation temperature to great extent. Fuel properties of the pyrolysis oil were determined and compared with standard values of commercial fuel oil. The comparison suggested potential application of pyrolysis oil for domestic and commercial use.

RESUMO

Examination and comparison of fountain pen inks are very important in forensic questioned documents examination in developing countries where the chances of fraud are greater in cases of cheques, marriage papers, entry of birth and death, etc. In this study, fountain pen inks of blue, black, green, and red colours that are commercially used in Pakistan have been discriminated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TLC, and FTIR spectroscopy. We have calculated and compared the results in terms of discriminating power. UV/Visible Spectroscopy of fountain pen inks of different brands showed different composition despite their similar colours. TLC was effectively used to differentiate between the colored components of inks. FTIR results showed that each brand could be distinguished by studying the pattern of their absorption spectra that appeared due to the presence of different functional groups. On the basis of combined results of UV-VIS, TLC, and FTIR, the DP was found from 0.73-0.8 for blue, 0.80-1.0 for black, 0.5-1.0 for green, and 1.0 for red colored fountain pen inks. Overall, this study demonstrated the elevated worth of analysis of fountain pen inks commercially used in Pakistan as the study for fountain pen inks, while not very common, remains an interesting target study.
